Quint, on the other hand, was a very likeable character. Her powers gave her a bit of a complex at first, but I did enjoy the addition of this touch of magic into the story, which I’ll get more into later. She’s a pretty unlikable main character–she’s judgmental and extremely critical and is also pretty entitled, which can be difficult to read from the perspective of, especially once she inherits her karma power and realizes she can inflict good and bad karma on others based on their actions. The main character, Prudence, took some getting used to. But, once I got past that and recognized that this story was just supposed to be a fun romance and stripped away those expectations from her previous books, I had a great time! To me, this story felt like a combination of The Last Song (without the sad, cancer storyline) and Again, but Better, both of which are favorites of mine. Her writing was definitely stripped down for this book, which at first threw me off. Contemporaries are written differently, and that was apparent here. I think my problem was that I went into this contemporary with the same high expectations that I had from her collection of sci-fi and fantasy novels. Not to mention, I just adore her writing it really immerses you into her stories. I think her storytelling is always intricate and well thought-out, her worldbuilding is inspiring, and her character work is incredible.
